ON THE PITCH

Since the start of the season the 5th and 6th Soccer Teams were able to find the back of the net often during two high scoring matches. In their first two games against Mizzentop and Rumsey Hall, Xani and Tristan proved to be strong players on the attacking front while Rhyer and Thatcher locked down the defense on the other end of the field. All three teams, Riggs, Rouse, and Doolittle will work together this season to face some challenging opponents and continue to improve throughout the course of the fall.

With a combination of returners and newcomers, the JV Boys Soccer Team started the season off strong with a 6-2 win over Berkshire Country Day school. A week later they kept the ball rolling with another big win and shut out against Renbrook School. The team will continue to focus on working together as a unit and utilizing the talent they have to secure more wins as the season progresses.

Both the Girls and Boys Varsity Soccer teams have been off to successful starts to their seasons with each team bringing home big wins in the first couple of weeks. The Boys Varsity team won five of their first six games this season and have continued to climb after a one goal loss to Berkshire at the start of the season. On the attacking front they have continued to find the back of the net with goals being scored by (including but not limited to) Hamza, Phillip, and Riley.

Coming off of their second straight undefeated season in 2018 the Girls Varsity Soccer team is on the right track. With three games under their belt the girls remain undefeated and have only tallied four goals against in the first three games due to strong goalkeeping by Luisa and a defensive unit that has been punishing to opponents attacking players. They look forward to continuing to improve and will be tested again this Saturday with another tough game on the road against Bement.

ON THE TRAIL

The Cross Country Team is off to a strong start in the Fall 2019 season, having the numbers, talent, and spirit required for team success. Coaches Al-Nemri and Hodosy have been very impressed by the hard work and fun nature of the athletes throughout the past couple of weeks at practice. They travelled to Taft for their first meet this past week and their hard work was apparent with over a half-dozen runners breaking into the top 20 in a field of over 200. Under the leadership of Lucas Z., Kevin Y., Quisha L., and Oliver E., the team continues to improve and is preparing for a number of home races this season. The new course, though hilly and technically challenging, brings runners through a variety of terrain and settings. It is also more spectator-friendly than in years past, as fans will be able to view runners for the first and last 0.75 miles of the course.

The Mountain Biking Team has been focusing on a variety of bike handling skills including mobility and balance on the bike, riding hills up and down, as well as riding over rocky and challenging terrain. The mountain behind campus provides a variety of challenges to test the skills of newcomers and returners alike. The returners include Sophia who is entering her third year of riding, along with Frankie and Allen who love to ride and finished their first seasons on the IMS Team last fall. Sam and Carlos join the team with prior experience on bikes and have been great additions to the group this year. Lastly, newcomer Darien is always volunteering to try new challenges and test his skills.

IN THE GYM

The Varsity Volleyball Team came back with a vengeance after an early loss to Hotchkiss in the beginning of the season. They defeated Hotchkiss on Sept 27th in 5 games, winning the first game and finishing strong in the last two games. Returner Joy played strong at the end of the fifth match to secure the win with strong serves and an ace to seal the deal. With the leadership of many returners including co-captains Dymond and Ivy the girls Varsity Volleyball team has continued to make strides and come together as one. By continuing to work on their consistency and play as a unit they should continue to secure some big wins in the next couple of weeks.

The JV Volleyball Team will begin their season this week with their first game against Oakwood on Friday the 27th. The team is composed of players with varying playing experience but certainly no shortage of talent. The team has been working hard alongside the varsity team to perfect their skills and have improved drastically over the past couple of weeks on the court.
Coach Statile and Coach Maraia have been very impressed by the focus and coachability that each athlete has shown. In addition, They are excited to watch new players step up under the pressure of game play and watch more leaders arise during the heat of competition.

ON THE STAGE

The five members of the Theatre ensemble have been devising a play from scratch this semester. G.B., Tony, Leah, Hannah, and Claire are diving into the work- creating their own characters through a series of improvisations, choreographing dances, writing dialogue, playing music, and more. This process of “writing on their feet” is exhilarating, funny, and terrifying. They are still in the creation process of their play and look forward to surprising the audience with a production that makes the audience ponder: How far will a family go to keep their traditions intact?

Stay tuned for recaps from our Golf and Equestrian Teams early next month!
