After graduating IMS in 2014, Catherine Quaintance attended Berkshire School and then graduated from Northeastern University with a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics. Ten years later she found herself back in the halls of IMS, this time as a faculty member.

IMS: What was your overall experience as a student at IMS?

CQ: I attended grades 8 and 9 at IMS.  Everyone was so nice and the supportive environment made it easy to build meaningful, lasting friendships.  I actually met one of my closest friends in the Fast Start Program before school started my first year, and although we went to different high schools and colleges, we still chat regularly despite living in different time zones now!

IMS: What drew you back to the Mountain?

CQ: I had such a positive experience at IMS. I loved being able to continue to pursue my passions like theater and ski racing while also getting to try things that were newer to me, like Rock Band and A Cappella. The school’s emphasis on personal growth and diverse opportunities left a lasting impression, and I’m excited to see how it’s continued to evolve.

IMS: What has been your favorite part of working at IMS so far?

CQ: The people! It’s been wonderful reconnecting with my former teachers—many of whom are still here—and getting to know the students. They’re bright, motivated, and respectful, making every day a rewarding experience.

IMS: What’s one piece of advice you would give your younger self knowing what you know now as an IMS faculty member?

CQ: Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and try new things. IMS has such a wide range of opportunities from sustainability trips to special clubs to leadership opportunities, use this time to try anything and everything!
