A Yearly Tradition in Third Grade
In honor of Día de los Muertos, our third graders created altars to celebrate loved ones (family members and pets) who have passed away. This day, known in English as ‘Day of the Dead,’ is celebrated throughout Latin America from October 31-November 2. Our students completed research on the history and significance of different symbols of the holiday, including marigolds, sugar skulls (calaveras de azúcar), and altars (ofrendas). In their altars, students included photographs, mementos and some of their loved ones’ favorite things. They also decorated sugar skulls, and enjoyed Bread of the Dead (pan de muerto) which is a traditional food eaten during this time. The third graders really immersed themselves into this cultural experience and now have a greater understanding of the tradition.
