After over a year of no competition, the baseball, boys lacrosse, and girls lacrosse teams travelled to Rumsey Hall on Friday, April 30th for their first games of the season while varsity tennis and softball represented IMS at home. IMS will compete for five consecutive Fridays this spring against other local schools.

The Varsity Tennis team played the first ever competitive matches on our newly constructed tennis courts on campus and won a tight match against Rumsey 4-3. Both Coach Hodosy and Coach Rincon are proud of the whole team for fighting through and playing their game despite gusts of winds near 50 miles per hour and overall tough conditions. According to Coach Hodosy, Captain and ninth grade leader Jack Moucha “won at 1st singles against a skilled and steady opponent without losing his nerve.” In addition, 6th grader Lily Chandler “handedly beat her opponent by using her reliable ground strokes and smart decision making.” In addition, Jamie Levine focused on his service game to come out on top and Hudson Demmert played with high tennis IQ to beat a tough opponent playing as #2. 

Thanks to the strong leadership of captains, Reinah Lee and Greta Dunavant, the girls softball team displayed a dominating performance against Rumsey Hall on Friday. Reinah pitched an amazing game, and only gave up a few hits in seven innings. For most of the team, it was their first softball game, their first time getting a hit at bat, and their first time scoring a run. Dailyn Simancas Alcazar made a huge hit with the bases loaded, resulting in a double and had countless RBI’s. Katherine LaFond did an amazing job at first base, as did Esther Lee at second base. While it was Madeline’s first game in the outfield, she was able to field an outfield hit quickly and turn a dicey situation into a single. 

The Baseball team had a strong showing against Rumsey with Jayden Hernandez, Liam Colley, and John Maida splitting time on the mound, and all pitching accurately. Coach Barillaro states that the “the team benefited from some walks and wild pitches with Ross Ezrow and John Maida providing some timely hits” and “Kai Vitiello made a run saving catch to end the 3rd inning” and the game went down to the wire.

Meanwhile, at Rumsey the Boys Varsity Lacrosse team pulled off a close team win, 13-12, in the last minutes of the 4th quarter. The energy on the bench powered a strong performance on the field backed by goalie, Russell Soja, in his first varsity game. On the offensive end Will Mulder contributed many goals and assists while Cole Mollica showed his endurance making his presence known both on the offensive and defensive end of the field. Notably, 9th grader Noble Whitfield was tasked with shutting down and denying Rumsey’s best attackman which he took in stride and on the offensive end he scored the game winning goal, with minutes to spare in the 4th quarter. The boys will certainly look to channel this energy and momentum heading into their game on the road against Millbrook this Friday.

Girls lacrosse played a competitive first game against Rumsey with a number of athletes including, Sylvie Fishman Janowitz, Leelee Sammis, Annabel Kim, and Mansa Awuah competing in their first ever lacrosse game. On the defensive end Olive Simpson worked hard to shut down Rumsey’s best midfielder in transition and protect IMS goalie, Frankie Yuranich who tallied 10 saves on the day. IMS found success in the midfield with draw possessions by Ava Wallack and other midfielders sparking fast transitions to the attacking end. The Falcons will continue to work on their composure and make smart decisions with the ball in combination with the effort and energy they showed against Rumsey during their next competition.

On campus our non-competitive teams including Ultimate Frisbee,Varsity Golf, Co-ed soccer, and Co-ed volleyball have been practicing and participating in inter-squad scrimmages to test out their skills. 

IMS Coaches and Athletes look forward to another chance to compete against Millbrook school this Friday, May 14th.
