Remembering John Quirk

We were deeply saddened to hear that our good friend John Quirk passed away at 1:00 am on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at the age of 60. 

 

John began his teaching career at Indian Mountain’s Lower School, formerly the Town Hill School, in the fall of 1988. His deep philosophical approach to teaching and learning provided our children with a rich, creative experience for 24 years. So many of us had a strong bond with John, and he will be greatly missed.

“As a teacher, a colleague, an inventor, a storyteller, an artist, a performer, a philosopher, and a man who always made learning and life an adventure, Mr. Quirk endeared himself to children and adults of all ages,” said Trish Stanley, Head of the Lower School where Mr. Quirk taught. “He was a master of the teachable moment, and was someone with great insights into children. He served as a true role model for ‘love of learning,’ kindness, and support to others. Mr. Quirk had great appreciation for every child’s special gifts, talents, and interests and always offered compliments or humorous observations that elicited smiles.” His long time colleague and friend, Mrs. Kathy Pressman, once described John’s credo with a quote from William Butler Yeats: “Education is not the filling of a pail, but instead the lighting of a fire!” John Quirk was truly that one in a million mentor to so many students. He was an integral part of the fiber, fabric, traditions, and philosophy of Indian Mountain School.

Indian Mountain School is hosting a short gathering to celebrate the life of John Quirk and the joy and inspriation that he brought to our community, Sunday, October 27 at 9:30 am on the Lower Campus.
